The police in the Rhein-Erft district are currently recording an increasing number of fraud cases in which perpetrators attempt to obtain money from the victims using a bold bank phishing scam.
Bank phishing via fake bank websites
According to initial investigations, the perpetrators obtain the personal data of the victims via fake websites from credit institutions. According to current knowledge, these websites can appear in the search engine results list or users can get there through a phishing email. When victims find themselves on such a website, fraudsters trick users into entering their details. They give an excuse, for example changing the online banking process. Those affected usually receive a call from an alleged bank employee and are asked to confirm the specified changes using an SMS TAN.
Be careful when the bank calls
Alternatively, the bank phishing perpetrators monitor account movements using the access data they have obtained and call the victims immediately after a transfer has been made. The fake bank advisors pretend that the transfer was misdirected. They claim that they want to get the money back and that they need a TAN.
The criminals then use this code to initiate transfers to third-party accounts.
Police warn: remain skeptical!
The police therefore strongly advise citizens to be skeptical if they receive text messages or calls from supposed bank advisors. Calls that demand immediate customer cooperation are not genuine but are initiated by bank phishing scammers. Employees of banks or credit institutions never request confidential data via SMS, email or telephone. Bank advisors usually request or announce changes to online banking, changes to security procedures or other security problems in relation to an account in writing.
