One of the most common myths on the Internet claims that former US President Barack Obama said that Germany was an "occupied country" during a visit to Germany in 2009. A statement that comes up again and again on social media and portrays Germany as a country that is still under the control of the Allies. But is that really true? This video is currently doing the rounds:

Obama's visit to Germany in 2009

Barack Obama visited Germany on June 5, 2009. His trip first took him to Dresden, where he met then-Chancellor Angela Merkel. Together they visited the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial near Weimar. He then traveled to Ramstein Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate, the largest US air base outside the USA, and visited a nearby US military hospital. However, his visit to Rhineland-Palatinate was not public, as the Ramstein Air Base announced at the time.

The alleged statement that “ Germany is an occupied country and will remain so ” is found neither in the media reports of the day nor in Obama's speech archive. In fact, he said instead that “ Germany is a close friend and crucial partner .”

Fact check: Is Germany an occupied country?

The claim that Germany is still an occupied and therefore not sovereign country is widely spread on the Internet, particularly by the so-called “Reichsbürger” who believe in a conspiracy theory that Germany is not a sovereign state.

But the reality looks different. Germany was occupied by the Western Allies from September 1949 to May 1955 ( HERE ). Since the Paris Treaty came into force in May 1955, Germany has been a sovereign state. The Two Plus Four Treaty of 1991 finally ended any reservation ( HERE ) against Germany's full sovereignty.

Fact check table: Germany – an occupied country?

Barack Obama said that Germany is and will remain an occupied countryThere is no evidence that Obama made this statement
Germany is an occupied countryGermany has been a sovereign state since the Paris Treaties came into force in May 1955
Germany does not have full sovereigntyThe Two Plus Four Treaty of 1991 confirms Germany's full internal and external sovereignty

Conclusion

Some people on the Internet say that Barack Obama said Germany was an "occupied country." But that is not true. When Obama visited Germany in 2009, he said nothing like that. In fact, he described Germany as a “close friend and important partner.”

It is also claimed that Germany is still an occupied country and not free. But that's not true either. Germany was only occupied from 1949 to 1955. Since 1955, Germany has been a free country with its own control. Since 1991, Germany has had full control without any conditions.

This shows us that we shouldn't believe everything that's on the internet. It is important to seek the truth and check the facts.
