The new Price Information Ordinance (PAngV) came into force in Germany on May 28, 2022. What is new, among other things, is that the basic price must now be based on 1 kilogram (1 kg) or 1 liter (1 l). This ensures better comparability when purchasing.
Previously, the basic price for small packaging (up to 250 g/ml) could also be based on 100 g/ml. This made it difficult for many consumers to compare prices, for example for tomatoes in different packaging sizes. This exception no longer applies without replacement.
The MV consumer advice center carried out a market check with a small sample of food stores. In most cases, grocers have implemented this legal change. However, in some cases there is still some catching up to do.
There were still errors in the pricing in the fruit and vegetable department, as well as in the bars, biscuits and tea. The bars and chewing gum offered in the checkout area were also sometimes advertised with the wrong basic price based on 100 g.
