However, many of us know all too well the moment when the whole project (almost) falls apart in the truest sense of the word.

First aid for your smartphone

The tip to put your cell phone in a container of rice has long been declared a myth. Nowadays, this immediate measure simply gives us the certainty that we have at least done something.

A short dive poses little risk for new smartphones, as many devices are increasingly better sealed and glued than they were a few years ago. iPhones in particular are said to be increasingly better equipped to protect against water damage, but the risk of damage has also decreased for other brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei.

IP certification

The IP certification provides information about how well a smartphone is protected against external influences such as water and dust. The first number indicates the level of protection against dust on a scale from 0 to 6 and the second number represents protection against water and can have values in the range from 0 to 9.

An IP-68 certification means that the mobile device can demonstrate both the highest level of dust and water protection. However, these certifications cannot be converted 1:1 because in the laboratory where these tests are carried out, the device is only placed flat and falling into the water is not simulated at all.

Even if the smartphone has a high IP certification, contact with water should still be strictly avoided, the manufacturers advise.
