In a business-looking email, a lawyer threatens to issue a warning, but the letter is not from the real law firm!

The most important thing about the false warning email from the law firm:

  1. The email threatens a high fine for copyright infringement
  2. However, there is a harmful Trojan behind the link in the email
  3. The real law firm warns itself about the fake emails

Apparently the Raimer law firm from Düsseldorf sends warning emails in which they threaten to pay a large sum if they continue to make music available on the Internet. But it is neither mentioned who the law firm's client should be nor is it stated how exactly which music is offered for download.

This is what the email looks like:

The email says:

Subject: Warning case: 36598577

Ladies and Gentlemen

On behalf of and on behalf of our client, we hereby request you in accordance with §§ 97, 77 78 No. 1, 85 16, 19a UrhG,

to refrain from
making our client's protected music repertoire available on the Internet or exploiting it in any other way without their necessary consent, and

To secure this injunctive relief, to undertake to
pay a contractual fee in the amount of

1240.89 EUR to be paid.

In the interest of an amicable out-of-court settlement of the matter,
our client offers you to comprehensively
resolve the matter at hand by means of a settlement by paying a settlement amount to compensate our client for
compensation due to the infringement of copyright rights.

The statement of the invoice and the exact course of events can be found in the attached archive.

The text “To the archive” does not have a link; instead, you should click on a link as an alternative. However, there is a file with a Trojan hidden behind it!

The downloaded files

The compressed file, which you download by clicking on the link in the email, contains two files, a PDF document and a Javascript file.

While the PDF file cannot be opened because it is corrupted, the Javascript file named “KOSTENOTE” can cause a lot of damage. When you double-click, various Trojans are downloaded from the Internet and installed on the PC!

Warning about fake emails

Ladies and Gentlemen

There are currently fake emails in circulation that are intended to give the impression that they are being sent by our law firm.
For example, these emails ask you to sign a cease and desist declaration or pay a fine.
These are not emails from Raimer Law Firm.

Please do not under any circumstances open any attachments or click on any links contained in the email!

Kind regards,
your team at the Raimer law firm
