Many users are concerned that this beauty filter could help promote unrealistic beauty ideals and have a negative impact on young people's body image.
The filter, called “Bold Glamour,” uses artificial intelligence to change users’ faces and give them smoother, clearer skin. But the facial structure is also partially changed: the nose becomes narrower, the lips fuller, explains Professor Memo Akten from the University of California in a video .
Reactions to the “Bold Glamor” beauty filter
While some users find the filter entertaining and enjoy using it, many others have expressed concerns.
“I know people think these things are fun, but they can be very harmful to society.”
Augmented reality
Users are also concerned about the exceptional precision of the augmented reality filter. The filter does a clean job by staying where it should be: exclusively on the user's face. Some of them show that it makes no difference whether you put your hand or hair over your face. It is almost impossible to tell that this is a filter.
Danger to self-esteem
Experts warn that such filters could harm young people's self-esteem by giving them an unrealistic ideal of beauty and causing them to be more critical of their own appearance. They could also help raise the already high standards of the beauty industry, increasing the pressure on young people to look perfect.
A photographer who has a lot of experience with her clients' self-perception from her everyday professional life also expresses her concerns:
“These filters are nonsense because frequent use leads people to believe that they actually look like that. These filters manipulate our brains in such a way that we actually believe we look like the photos. The realism of these filters is so impressive that people can be shocked when they see themselves in a photo without a filter. They use these filters and that is their basis. As a result, these filters have a negative impact on people’s self-esteem and body image.”
Given these concerns, many users have called for people to stop using the beauty filter on TikTok and instead embrace and celebrate everyone's natural beauty. It remains to be seen whether TikTok will respond to the criticism, perhaps removing the filter or making changes to address users' concerns.
