We are currently receiving a lot of inquiries about a status post that reads something like “ Assault by a “clan family” on AfD politician On the evening of May 18th, there was an insidious assassination attempt on an AfD politician of the newly elected district council in the Schleswig-Flensburg district committed.” What happened?

In Schleswig, AfD district council member Bent Lund was injured in a knife attack

According to the Flensburg public prosecutor's office, Lund was attacked on Ascension Day and had to be hospitalized as a result. He is now back home. The public prosecutor's office is investigating the alleged perpetrator, a 31-year-old Iraqi, for grievous bodily harm. Due to the risk of recurrence, the suspect is currently in custody.

Video: After a knife attack on AfD politician Bent Lund, Flensburg senior public prosecutor Bernd Winterfeldt describes the status of the investigation.

Although Lund's party, the AfD, characterized the attack as a "targeted murder attempt" and "life-threatening injuries," prosecutors did not confirm this account. Authorities are currently investigating the case as grievous bodily harm, not attempted homicide. The public prosecutor also emphasized that Lund's life was never in danger.

Before the attack, there was a physical altercation that prosecutors say also involved Lund's son. The regional chairman of the AfD Schleswig-Flensburg, Jan Petersen-Brendel, stated that Lund's son is said to have defended himself against two attackers with a bicycle lock, who were seriously injured.

In order to prevent further conflicts, Lund and his son have obtained an injunction from the Flensburg regional court against two people. This ban prevents these people from contacting Lund and his son or visiting places where they regularly stay. The order was issued without hearing the persons concerned and is valid until November 19, 2023.

Despite the ongoing investigation, the possible political background to the attack remains unclear as the authorities have not yet provided any information.
