The city of Berlin is setting up an additional hospital specifically for those infected with COVID-19. It will provide space for up to 1,000 patients.

Berlin is planning an additional hospital for COVID-19 patients

The hospital will have space for up to 1,000 patients.
It should only be used to avoid a real bottleneck.

Yesterday, March 17, 2020, the Berlin Senate decided on extensive measures to prepare the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

In a press release, Dilek Kalayci, Senator for Health, Care and Equality, explains the following:

“The health administration, together with the Berlin hospitals, prepared early for the treatment of corona patients. There is a three-tier system that regulates the division of labor between hospitals. In addition, it was agreed that hospitals would expand their capacity for intensive care treatment with ventilation.

Today the Senate passed two further measures that also expand capacities. On the one hand, hospitals are required by legal regulation to postpone planned operations in order to create capacity for possible COVID -19 patients at an early stage.

Today the Senate followed my proposal to initiate the establishment of a COVID -19 hospital with a capacity of up to 1,000 patients in collaboration with the Bundeswehr and other partners. This measure is an addition to Berlin’s well-positioned hospital landscape in order to address possible bottlenecks.”

Due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, there will also be more people suffering from COVID-19 in Berlin. The highest number of patients is probably expected in the next few months - depending on the further course of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Germany.

In order to reduce possible bottlenecks in clinical care, the capacity of inpatient care in Berlin is to be expanded by 1,000 additional beds. For this purpose, a project will be set up with a project manager and a project group.

The following measures will be implemented for this purpose:

  1. A division of labor for patient management and the use of resources was decided with the Berlin emergency hospitals and emergency centers. For this purpose, Berlin's emergency hospitals and emergency centers are assigned to a total of three levels of care, in which COVID -19 patients are provided with care based on their needs, depending on the severity of the disease.
  2. Berlin's emergency hospitals and emergency centers were asked to significantly increase their capacity for intensive care and intensive ventilation in particular.
  3. Berlin's emergency hospitals and emergency centers have been asked to postpone, postpone or cancel all elective care, where medically justifiable, in order in particular to create and concentrate COVID
  4. An additional COVID -19 hospital will be set up in collaboration with the Bundeswehr and other partners. This hospital is intended to be used additionally and exclusively to avoid a real bottleneck and to provide care for those who are mildly ill and require inpatient care as well as patients requiring emergency ventilation.
