It sounds like something out of a spy thriller: You're surfing the Internet and stumble across an article that claims to be from the "Berliner Morgenpost". But behind this facade lies a sophisticated deception that has far-reaching political motives. This is exactly what happened recently with an article that claimed to be Berliner Morgenpost
The fictitious title on the fake website of the Berliner Morgenpost: “The Germans have lost to the Russians again”

Fake news at first glance
Upon closer inspection, it quickly became clear that something was wrong. The article, supposedly from the renowned “Berliner Morgenpost”, bore the newspaper’s logo and seemed trustworthy at first glance. But as we all know, the devil is in the details. The URL gives it away: Instead of the expected “http://morgenpost.de” it says “morgenpost. ltd ”.
Note: According to “ Archiv.today” , the page was probably created in June 2023 and has published several fake news articles since then, with the following titles:
- The Germans lost again to the Russians
- Have Europeans fallen in love with Putin?
- Russia's military capabilities leave Kiev no chance
- Lithuania could become a second Ukraine
- Israel needs Merkava tanks itself
- Zelensky's Knockin' on Heaven's Door
- Killed or wounded, arrested or kidnapped: Ukrainian versions of Saluzhny's disappearance
- Washington has decided on Zelensky's successor
- Washington begins to dismantle Zelensky
More than just a misformat
Besides this first obvious discrepancy, there were other clues that showed something was fishy here. Strange praise for Vladimir Putin – all without being labeled as an opinion piece. Grammar mistakes in a professional article? Another red alert.
A puzzle of disinformation
It's not an isolated action. Investigations revealed that this fake Morning Post article is part of a much larger machine. Over 30 such fake websites were discovered last year - all with the aim of specifically spreading disinformation and undermining trust in institutions and media.
The reactions: Don't stand idly by
Reaction to these fakes was predictably concerned. The Federal Ministry of the Interior, well-known news agencies and even the French General Secretariat for Defense and Security sounded the alarm. The EU has reacted and imposed sanctions against those suspected of being behind these fake campaigns.
What's behind the fake?
The false “Morgenpost” text is part of a larger disinformation campaign. Our research at the beginning of 2022 showed that such fake websites mostly spread pro-Russian content and that several European countries have already been affected. The EU has already sanctions on those responsible. Meta also became active in this direction at that time. In addition to T-Online , we also HERE .
Conclusion: vigilance in the digital age
The case of the fake Morning Post article is another example of the increasingly complex challenges we face in our interconnected world. It shows the importance of always being vigilant, checking sources and not taking everything presented to us online at face value. It reminds us that information literacy and education are critical to distinguishing truth from fiction and protecting our democracy.
