There are many myths about the health benefits of berries. Sigrun Chrubasik explains what is true. The general practitioner researches what active ingredients are in plants and how they benefit health. According to Chrubasik, berries contain important substances that people need to stay healthy. These included, for example, vitamins, trace elements and secondary plant substances. The secondary plant substances are substances that protect the plant in nature.

Berries help against diseases

It is precisely the substances that are responsible for colors and aromas that ensure the berry's medicinal effects. According to Chrubasik, they have strong free radical scavenging properties. This is good for patients who produce a lot of radicals, such as those affected by diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity. These active ingredients are mainly found in dark berries, which is why they are particularly healthy. According to Chrubasik, in Korea it is also common to eat a bowl of blueberries every day because they are said to strengthen eyesight.

Heat disrupts the active ingredient in berries

The healthy active ingredients are mainly found in raw berries and are very sensitive to temperature. For example, if the berries are heated to make jam, syrup or something similar, the active ingredients are destroyed. In order to process berries as gently as possible, they can be fermented. According to Chrubasik, the fermented berries also help with irritable bowel syndrome. However, the berries still have the most to offer in their normal state.
