Increasingly brazen: “Fake police officers” listen in on conversations between the victims and the real police.

The Bochum police warn almost weekly about “fake police officers” who often use their fraudulent schemes to swindle thousands, tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of euros.

And the criminal energy and technical knowledge of these fraudsters, who are constantly coming up with new chess moves, seems to be almost inexhaustible.

Criminals listen in on conversations

The police are aware of cases in which these perpetrators also incorporate police warnings into their criminal script:

The “fake police officers” know that we ask our citizens to immediately call “110”, the police emergency number, if they have the feeling that they could be fraudsters.

And now comes the highlight: In order to “come across as serious and credible” to the victims, who are usually older, the criminal callers ask them to call “110” from within the existing conversation – i.e. without hanging up first.

In the background, the criminals then have the opportunity to listen in on the conversation between the victim and the real police. In doing so, they gain detailed knowledge that is used to continue the crime and obtain the loot, usually cash or jewelry.

At this point our urgent appeal:

“Before dialing “110”, please be sure to end the “old” conversation, i.e. hang up the receiver or press the “end” button. This is the only way to prevent the “fake police officers” from listening in.

In addition, the police never ask about your financial situation – neither by telephone nor at the door of your house or apartment!”
