The injured party received a call from a male person who claimed to be a service employee at his bank. It showed the bank's phone number on the display.
Online banking: Do not give out confidential information
The fraudster stated that there were irregularities in his account. By cleverly conducting conversations on two consecutive days, the perpetrator managed, among other things, to approve transfers that the perpetrator made via the victim's online banking account. The money was transferred to various cryptocurrency exchanges abroad via an interim account.
Showing the phone number on the display is no longer a guarantee that the call actually comes from the bank or an authority. The phenomenon of calling someone under a different identity or phone number is called call ID spoofing. Internet telephony makes this scam possible. Fraudsters abuse this by displaying the number of a bank or government agency to obtain confidential information.
The police therefore recommend:
- Never give out sensitive or personal information over the phone.
- Never make transfers over the phone.
- If in doubt: end the conversation and call the relevant bank or authority yourself to inquire.
