Fraudsters were once again successful in Rostock: in just four days they caused damage worth around 45,000 euros in the Hanseatic city. A total of five people from Rostock fell victim to the previously unknown perpetrators. Customers of Ostseesparkasse in particular are the focus of fraudsters. The boldest perpetrators always proceed in the same way:
After logging in to online banking, a message appears on the victim's screen asking them to verify themselves with a new TAN for online banking. If you comply with this request, the perpetrators have already struck. The customers are then contacted by supposed bank employees and asked to provide further transaction numbers.
The perpetrators use so-called call ID spoofing. This allows you to display the service number of the respective bank on the injured party's display. The transaction numbers requested in this way are then used by the perpetrators to simultaneously initiate immediate transfers to their own accounts.
In the period from July 8th, 2022 to July 11th, 2022, a total of five cases were reported to the Rostock police in this context. The greatest damage was suffered by a 63-year-old Rostock woman who was cheated out of around 25,000 euros.
The criminal police investigators have been observing an increase in crimes in connection with TAN procedures for around two months. More than 40 crimes have already been recorded in the Hanseatic city alone. Since then, the total damage has amounted to almost 100,000 euros.
In this context, the police expressly warn against the already known online banking scam:
- Never give out TANs or personal data over the phone!
- Do not follow any links that ask you to activate your account!
- If you are unsure, always make sure who you are dealing with and call your bank back using the number you know!
- Don't let yourself be put under pressure and if in doubt, end the conversation!
