This is how the perpetrators proceed: The fraudsters do not contact the sellers as usual via the contact function, but directly via the WhatsApp messenger service in order to enter into sales negotiations.
To do this, they predominantly come into contact with users whose mobile phone numbers are visible in their profile. Shortly before the sale is completed, the fraudsters suggest completing the purchase using the “Secure Pay” function. To do this, they send a link that leads to a website that looks deceptively real.
The unsuspecting victims then enter their account or credit card details on this fake site and assume that the money will be credited to their account in the next few days. But the expected payment does not materialize and instead the perpetrators use the account details to withdraw money without authorization.
Fraud on the eBay sales portal!
In this context, the Rostock police advise:
- Only use the payment functions/“secure payment” function of the sales portals and do not follow any links!
- If you have become a victim of such fraud, inform your credit institution and the police!
