Fraudsters send deceptively genuine letters using the so-called SecureGo procedure - this gives the perpetrators unrestricted access to online banking.

Access to online banking: As the Siegen-Wittgenstein police warn, a couple from Bad Berleburg became victims of an internet fraud scam in the last few weeks.

The resulting damage amounts to several tens of thousands of euros. What happened: The perpetrators applied for the so-called SecureGo procedure using improperly obtained online banking access data. This is activated by the bank and the customer receives the access data with activation code by post.

This is how the scam works

Now the trick: At the same time, the perpetrators send a deceptively genuine letter by post, which asks the account holder to authenticate themselves online with the activation code for the first use.

The deceived users do not access the bank's website via the website specified in this letter, but rather a website run by the fraudsters. This is used by the perpetrators to receive the activation code that was sent to them. The activation code gives the perpetrators unrestricted access to the account.

The criminal police advise: If you receive dubious mail, emails or telephone calls from banks with unsolicited access or requests for identification, it is recommended not to comply, but rather to contact the bank's contact person.

Calls that contain the bank's phone number can also be manipulated. Call your bank advisor back and ask.
