The Wilhelmshaven/Friesland police station repeatedly warns against the fraudulent actions of criminals and hopes that regular press releases and intensive prevention work will transmit information and raise awareness among the population.
Scams are diverse
In this specific case, the police are warning about a fraud that recently occurred in Wilhelmshaven. A 90-year-old woman from Wilhelmshaven received a call saying there was counterfeit money in her account. To do this, a bank employee must collect the EC card and PIN in order to be able to check it at the bank branch.
As part of this, a check of savings is also mandatory, so that the stored cash must also be checked in the bank. An employee of the financial institution is already on the way to her.
As a result, the fraudsters took the savings and then withdrew money from the ATM using the stolen debit card and the PIN, which was also obtained by fraud.
Not individual perpetrators, but gangs
Behind these crimes are professional gangs that work on a division of labor. The goal is always to gain trust in order to then receive a larger amount of cash or a transfer.
How can you protect yourself?
To prevent things from getting that far, here are the following tips:
- Save the phone number in your phone
- If you are unsure: end the phone call and call your bank.
- Keep calm and don't let yourself be put under pressure.
- Bank employees never visit your home address to carry out any checks
- Bank employees never ask for your PIN.
- File a criminal complaint with the police.
