Such campaigns are often displayed, particularly in advertising on YouTube. The highly emotional recordings should lead to quick and large donations. Often, however, nothing can be found about the donation platforms and the money ends up in the pockets of dubious fundraisers instead of going to children in need.

“I don't want to say goodbye just because my mom has no money,” says a six-year-old child with cancer on the chenlahaim.org platform. Translated: “I don’t want to have to say goodbye just because my mother doesn’t have any money.”

Such emotional messages are an attempt to raise donations that will be used to help the child pictured. Countless inconsistencies on the websites and missing and inconclusive information about the companies that receive the money suggest a scam that only aims to take money out of the pockets of those willing to donate.

Numerous inconsistencies on the donation websites

The “Chen LeChaim Association” is supposedly behind the donation appeal pictured. The spelling changes again and again on the website or in the web address. Sometimes people talk about “Chen Lahaim”, “Chen Lachaim” or “Chen Lechaim”. The specified registration number from the Israeli company register cannot be verified.

Only a Gmail address is provided as an email contact. In the case of a fundraising campaign that, in the case shown, is supposed to bring in over 700,000 euros, this can be judged to be absolutely dubious.

The purpose of the transfer details should be “for Achmad's campaign”. According to the website, the call for donations is not for Achmad, but for Muhammad. The website operators were working improperly here.

Highly emotional texts, images and videos

The focus here is on highly emotional content in order to increase the willingness to donate. We cannot conclusively judge whether the images and videos displayed are real. In any case, the texts are not written by the children themselves, even if they are written in the first person. The suspicion is that the difficult fate of various seriously ill children is being exploited in order to collect donations.

Recognize real requests for donations

The Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor offers the following information on how to identify serious donation requests .

Austrian Donation Quality Seal offers further help .

With this help, you can be sure that the money you donate actually gets where it needs to go.

Of course, it does not mean that all other requests for donations are fraudulent. However, it is important to ensure that online fundraising appeals are transparent. This is not the case with Chen Lechaim, for example. For example, if you are made aware of a gofundme.com fundraising campaign, it may actually have a real background. But under no circumstances should you let highly emotional appeals persuade you to make donations without checking their background.
