For a few weeks now, the Economic Crime Department of the Karlsruhe Criminal Investigation Department has been recording an increasing number of reports in the area of investment fraud following prior telephone contact from alleged investment brokers.
Investment fraudsters are behind the calls; The Karlsruhe police also reported about this on Facebook . In this way, the fraudsters try to get investors' money by telephone - with the promise of fantastic and secure profits.
“Cold Calling”
In such cases, the first contact with the potential victim is made by the perpetrator unsolicited by telephone, in the form of so-called “cold calling”. The investment fraudsters, who mostly operate from abroad using false phone numbers and identities, pretend, for example, that they can sell shares at a high discount to an exclusive group of investors for a short time and then take them back a few days or weeks later at a guaranteed higher fixed price.
With this deception, victims are tricked into transferring money to accounts located abroad. The fraudsters then send investors fake investment and return confirmations by email or fax. Subsequent contact between fraudsters and victims only takes place by telephone, email or fax.

Professional looking investment scam websites
In some cases, the professional fraudsters set up complex websites on the Internet with which the victims can log in and monitor the simulated financial investments and (steadily increasing) profits in supposedly “their accounts”. After investors have gained confidence based on the performance confirmations of returns, they are often prepared to invest even larger amounts of money.
The scammers pressure victims to make additional deposits, saying that unexpected problems have arisen that need to be resolved with additional payments. The money deposited is usually lost forever and the alleged financial investments do not actually exist.
Advice from specialists
The criminal police specialists therefore advise being extremely suspicious of highly profitable investments that are advertised as safe and offered by strangers or institutions. Such investments generally do not exist and, under serious circumstances, they are not offered over the telephone. If in doubt, we recommend contacting your house bank.
