The year 1946 was not a good year for the residents of Bikini Atoll, a small island paradise somewhere in the middle of nowhere in the South Pacific.
The inhabitants of the islands were forcibly evacuated by the USA so that experiments could be carried out there “for the benefit of all humanity”: detonation of nuclear bombs. In 12 years, 23 explosions accumulated a lot of radiation that is said to have affected the fictional Bikini Bottom - so are SpongeBob and his friends radioactive mutants?
The Bikini Bottom mutant theory: what's behind it?
The theory first appeared on Reddit in . User "Capmaster" responded to the question about the wildest fan theories that sound logical: " The existence of Spongebob and his strange friends is the result of radiation from nuclear weapons tests that took place on the Bikini Island in the late '40s and early '50s. Atoll were carried out. Because they live beneath the atoll, the town is known as “Bikini Bottom” .
Other users supported the theory by adding, for example, that chipmunks were kept on board small naval ships during these tests and that the chipmunk Sandy Cheeks in the series appears to be wearing a “full protective suit” and that her name also comes from the huge amounts of sand caused by the explosions should have been created, inspired.
In addition to Bikini Bottom, there is also a place called “Rock Bottom” deep down in a crater, which, according to fan theory, was created by one of the underwater explosions and whose inhabitants are even stranger.
There are a lot of explosions in the series itself, which are often combined with shots of nuclear explosions:
It is unclear whether SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and all the others are actually mutations, but it seems pretty clear that Bikini Bottom is located under Bikini Atoll. The location of Bikini Bottom was even shown once in an episode - and it is at least close to the atoll:

In an interview with Huffington Post in 2015, at least SpongeBob's original voice actor, actor Tom Kenny, confirmed the fan theory but contradicted the idea that the residents of Bikini Bottom are nuclear mutants:
“Well, Bikini Bottom is kind of named after the Bikini Atoll, where nuclear testing was done decades ago. So... no, that. I don't think SpongeBob and his friends are mutations. I think Bikini Bottom is like a world of its own... When the camera goes underwater and you go to Bikini Bottom, it's almost like another planet."

But only almost. Kenny further argues that there are no pop culture references in the series, which would make it so timeless, but he is sorely wrong, as the series is full of references and it's pretty clear that Bikini Bottom has a connection to the series real world has.
The Bikini Bottom Mutant Theory: What's Against It?
If the theory were correct, Bikini Bottom would have been created sometime in the 1940s and 1950s, when the bomb tests took place in Bikini Atoll. However, the episode " The Noble Knight " (originally: "Dunces and Dragons") shows that Bikini Bottom already existed in the 12th century and was then Bikini Bottomshire .
There are also several episodes in which the ancestors of today's residents can be seen in prehistoric times, for example in the episode " SpongeBob in the Stone Age " (original: "Ugh").
The result:
In fact, there is a lot to suggest that Bikini Bottom is located under the Bikini Atoll and that the residents are mutants: bomb tests at the time, the geographical location (all the fish and whales in the series live in the Pacific), even the point that atomic radiation is very common Rarely causing positive mutations is not wrong .
Purely biologically and even scientifically (in the broadest sense), the fan theory is correct... if the series itself didn't speak against it by showing in several episodes and scenes that Bikini Bottom has existed for centuries and even has prehistoric ancestors gave.
