A 71-year-old woman from Speyer came across an advertisement from an alleged online broker on a large social network. It promised profits in the cryptocurrency “Bitcoin”.

After contacting the broker, the lady deposited 5,000 euros. The broker asked them to install so-called remote software. This enabled the 71-year-old's PC to be controlled remotely.
Damage: 5,000 euros
In this way, the perpetrators debited 6,500 euros from the victim's account and transferred 25,000 euros from a savings book to the 71-year-old's checking account, presumably in order to transfer the money as well. The 71-year-old's bank account noticed the fraudulent actions and stopped the transfer, so that a total of only 5,000 euros in damage was incurred.
The police warn:
In order to acquire potential victims, cybercriminals create fraudulent online investment platforms on the Internet. These platforms look legitimate at first glance and are advertised on trustworthy websites and social media. Once the interested customer has registered online with the trading platform, the cybercriminals will contact them directly.

The “traders” are actually fraudsters who operate out of call centers. They support their “customers” very intensively via telephone and messenger service. During the course of the alleged advice, the victims are pressured into investing ever larger sums in highly speculative financial instruments and cryptocurrency after making the first, very small deposit.
The criminals, who very convincingly and confidently pose as real brokers, often use so-called remote software. This is used under the pretext of explaining and setting up the user account to customers. Meanwhile, the fraudsters steal data, such as credit cards and bank accounts, unnoticed. Using the access data obtained in this way, the fraudsters later transfer additional amounts to themselves without the knowledge of the victims.
