In the past few days, a citizen from the Reutlingen police headquarters' jurisdiction has been defrauded of a six-figure sum by criminals using a new scam: Bitcoin fraud!
Sophisticated Bitcoin scam
The 60-year-old had invested money in Bitcoins on a reputable trading platform from the middle of the current year and gradually deposited his savings. At the beginning of the week, a caller answered the man's cell phone and pretended to be an employee of the trading platform. The fraudster pretended that the support contract was expiring and needed to be renewed. This also means a higher return is possible. The criminal further stated that this would require a short-term transfer of the credit to another platform that supposedly belongs to the same trading company.
Never allow strangers access to computers
The fraud victim believed the serious-looking and well-spoken perpetrator and granted him so-called third-party access to his computer. As a result, several Bitcoin transfers with a six-figure value were carried out on a trading platform that, based on current knowledge, was probably fraudulent. The promised chargeback to the injured party's original Bitcoin account did not occur. How the perpetrators became aware of the 60-year-old's Bitcoin investment or obtained the man's phone number and data is currently the subject of ongoing investigations by the Esslingen Criminal Police Directorate.
