A young man from the northern district was blackmailed with an intimate video. The 18-year-old had presumably sent the video to a woman via an app on his smartphone on a chat platform.

Blackmailed with an intimate video: As the young man reported to the police, he had previously met the “chat partner” in a group chat and then continued to write to “her” privately. In addition to text messages, pictures were also exchanged until he finally sent “her” the video in which he exposed himself. The unknown “chat partner” then demanded that the 18-year-old transfer money via PayPal, otherwise she would post the video online and make it visible to everyone.

The young man decided not to give in to the blackmail but instead to call the police. The investigation into the blackmailer is ongoing…

The phenomenon of such blackmail involving intimate recordings has been known for a long time and is called “sextortion” – made up of the words “sex” and “extortion” (blackmail). The experts from the police crime prevention department of the states and the federal government (ProPK) provide detailed information about this on their website www.polizei-beratung.de under Sextortion - from harmless flirtation to organized blackmail

The best protection against this is: Never send photos or videos of yourself with intimate images to people you don't know well enough. And don't be persuaded to undress in front of their webcam during online chats. It is not uncommon for perpetrators to use these moments to make their own recordings and later use them to blackmail their victims.

And if you have fallen for such scammers and are already being blackmailed: Do not transfer any money, but report to the police!
