On February 1st, 2023, an internet user was sent a perfidious, blackmailing email. In this case, an unknown cybercriminal claimed that she was recorded with her own webcam while she was watching a porn film. There was also a threat that a compilation would be made in which the injured party would be shown masturbating to the porn film. The perpetrators demanded $1,400 in Bitcoin.
Blackmail email
This is a well-known scam.
Often peppered with personal data, attempts are made to give potential victims the feeling that the perpetrators actually have access to the PC. However, the data usually comes from purchased and/or cracked data lists. This goes so far that sometimes there are even telephone numbers or bank details in the emails.
- If you receive such an email, you should definitely report it to the police. This can also be done easily via online viewing.
- You should also check your bank accounts and change your passwords.
- The well-known information about sensitive data should always be observed. This means using strong passwords and a different password for each account.
- In principle, hacking the laptop/PC camera is entirely possible. If you want to be on the safe side, you can simply cover or tape the lens shut.
- If such emails have attachments, they should under no circumstances be opened, otherwise you could download viruses, Trojans and the like onto your devices without being noticed.
