An emergency brake that has never existed before: Donald Trump's Facebook and Twitter accounts were temporarily blocked and a video was deleted.

On January 6th, Joe Biden was confirmed as the future US President at the Capitol in Washington, USA, but before that it became chaotic: a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, the MPs had to be brought to safety - and still President Donald Trump Meanwhile, continued to spread false information.

Facebook blocks for 24 hours at least two weeks

Donald Trump mainly uses Twitter, and the same content is then published in parallel on Facebook. But Facebook put a stop to the US President due to the riots in front of and in the Capitol, as the company explains in a tweet:

“We have identified two policy violations on President Trump’s page that will result in a 24-hour feature suspension, meaning he will not be able to post to the platform during this time.”

Trump will also not be able to post anything on Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, for 24 hours, as Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, announced:

“We are also suspending President Trump’s Instagram account for 24 hours.”

UPDATE January 7, 5:15 p.m

As Mark Zuckerberg announced on Facebook, Trump's accounts on Facebook and Instagram will be blocked indefinitely, but at least for two weeks until Joe Biden's inauguration.

Twitter deletes and blocks

UPDATE January 9th 12:35 am

Twitter has now permanently blocked Trump's account.

“After careful review of the @realDonaldTrump account’s recent tweets and the context surrounding them, we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement to violence.”

On its own platform, Twitter announced that three Trump tweets had been deleted due to violations. The account was also blocked for 12 hours - permanently if he does not delete the tweets, which are currently only visible to Trump himself.

“As a result of the unprecedented and ongoing violent situation in Washington, DC, we have had to remove three @realDonaldTrump tweets posted earlier today for repeated and serious violations of our Civic Integrity policy.

This means that @realDonaldTrump's account will be suspended for 12 hours after these tweets are removed. If the tweets are not removed, the account will remain suspended.

Future violations of the Twitter Rules, including our civic integrity policies or violent threats, will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account.”

Among the deleted tweets was a short video of Donald Trump, who called on people in front of the Capitol to go home peacefully (after calling on people to demonstrate in Washington the days before), but at the same time repeated several times that the election was stolen and a fraud on the people - de-escalation works differently.

YouTube, which is owned by Google, has now also deleted the video.

Reacted way too late?

Blocking the accounts almost seems a little desperate, since Trump has been encouraging his supporters to protest for a long time: he doesn't know QAnon, but he thinks it's good because they support him, the violent "Proud Boys" are patriots, and also demands it he asked to come to Washington on January 6th.

Digital expert Dennis Horn published his thoughts on this on Facebook ( see HERE ):
The bans for Donald Trump on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Snapchat seem to me a little like the fire department bringing out a lot of fire water while the house has already burned down .”

It's not just moments like yesterday when the consistency of the platforms matters. It’s the years before that things are brewing – and in those years the platforms often didn’t even acknowledge their own responsibility.”
