Could it actually be as easy as the blood type diet claims to be? – Check your blood type, eat accordingly and the kilos will fall off? That sounds a bit adventurous, right?
The myth began with a post on the Chinese short message service Weibo that was shared more than 2,000 times. The statements in this post were truly astonishing and seductive at the same time: “I have blood type B and have found that I can't lose weight if I only eat eggs, chicken and corn,” is one of the sentences in the post. Really fascinating theory, right?
You can now find articles about this on all sorts of platforms. Graphics are also often shared, which at first glance show a rough overview of the optimal foods - depending on blood group:

But before we give in to the hype and jump into a new diet without thinking, it's worth taking a closer look at what this "bloody" diet trend is really about. Nutritionists consider these claims to be scientifically unfounded and even warn of possible negative health consequences of such diets.
On the trail of science
Edward Li, a nutritionist at the Hong Kong Dietitians Association (HKDA), told AFP there was simply no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of the blood type diet. He cited several studies that refute these claims and others that show possible benefits that have nothing to do with blood type.
One of these studies was in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2020 . Another study appeared in the journal PLOS One in 2014 . Both came to similar results: There were no significant differences in results between people with different blood types who followed both low-fat and vegan diets.
The fallacy of the blood type diet
Now you might ask yourself why blood type diets are so popular. According to the 2014 study, this is primarily due to their emphasis on eating a wholesome diet, avoiding processed foods and exercising. These principles are generally health-promoting and widely accepted among health professionals.
Rekha Menon , registered dietitian at HKDA, strongly cautioned against adopting blood group diets. She even described this form of diet as a misleading fad diet. Since the publication of the book “Eat Right For Your Type” by Peter J. D'Adamo in 1996, this form of diet has been booming.
D'Adamo pointed out that such a diet can actually be very harmful without proper guidance and supervision from a doctor. Especially because it encourages people to cut out key food groups without an allergy or medical condition being officially diagnosed.
Conclusion: The wrong path of blood group diets
In summary, it can be said that the suspected mechanism of action of blood group diets has not yet been scientifically confirmed. Nutritionists in particular point out that such diets can even have a negative impact on health due to poor nutrition. But that doesn't mean you should be skeptical about every diet. Rather, it is important to pay attention to a balanced and healthy diet and, if necessary, to seek professional support from certified nutritionists.
With this knowledge in mind, we shouldn't be misled by misleading diet trends and questionable social media posts. Because one thing is clear: real, sustainable and healthy weight loss does not come from any “miracle diets”, but from conscious lifestyle choices, a balanced diet and regular exercise. As banal as it may sound, this is the most proven and safest way to a healthy body and mind.
