A district name combined with a headline is likely to cause irritation.

In the last few days, an article has been shared on Facebook several times that is no longer current and was only valid at the time of its publication. It is an article from the Gießener Allgemeine from November 7th, 2012 with the title “27-year-old raped on loan yesterday: Police ask for information”. The question is, why is this currently being reshared?

As always, it may be a misunderstanding. If you skim the teaser roughly, you read “27-year-old raped on loan [yesterday]” . The place “leihgestern” could be interpreted separately as “loan” and “yesterday” and thus the headline would have a completely new message. Accordingly, the incident would supposedly have happened “yesterday”.

In addition, there is NO date displayed in the mobile edition of the article, so many people did not know the date (November 2012) and only noticed the relative “yesterday” in the title. Since the majority of Facebook users are now on mobile devices, they will also see a slightly shortened mobile teaser.

The editorial team of the Gießener Allgemeine Zeitung is now aware of this problem.

Furthermore, this rape has proven to be a fabrication. This could also be read in the Gießener Allgemeine, on December 5th, 2012 it was titled “Investigators: “Rape at Mietgestern fictitious”” [ 2]:

As the public prosecutor's office and the police announced on Wednesday, the rape reported to the police on November 6th by a woman who was on loan yesterday did not take place. The 27-year-old confessed this to the police on Tuesday, according to a press release.
