Have you ever thought about what could become of the small, inconspicuous bottle caps that we use to seal our beverage bottles? What if these small pieces of metal were the catalyst for a revolution in aid and support for combat-injured soldiers?
When a user sent us photos of a newspaper clipping, we started looking for the story behind it.

In this article you will learn how a simple call from the Bundeswehr became a nationwide movement that not only opened hearts but also wallets.
The emergence of an unexpected movement
Sergeant Major Alexander Schmidt would never have imagined that his initiative to collect bottle caps would be met with so much enthusiasm. Together with the Soldiers' Aid Organization, he launched the “Pfötchen – Bottle Caps for Therapy Dogs” campaign in 2019. The goal of the movement is to support soldiers in financing and training their assistance or therapy dogs. The unbelievable? It worked!
Two grams make the difference
Schmidt compared the importance of a single bottle cap to the weight of a snowflake. On its own it may seem insignificant, but when taken together it can have an enormous impact. A principle that also proved true in the collection campaign. Collection points were set up all over Germany and beyond.
The path from bottle cap to therapy dog
But how exactly does collecting bottle caps help? These small metal fasteners are sorted together with the generously donated electronic waste and sold to scrap dealers. The proceeds go directly to financing and training therapy dogs. the Bundeswehr reported that it had raised 12,405 euros for a good cause.
The community stands together
The initiative was met with enthusiasm not only within the Bundeswehr, but also among the general public. From companies like PECUNIA GmbH to sports clubs to families and individuals, everyone has come together to help soldiers injured in action.
Why is this campaign so important?
Therapy dogs are not just loyal companions. They provide emotional and psychological support, especially for people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The money from the bottle cap campaign helps to train these dogs and make them ready for use by the soldiers.
Conclusion
Collecting bottle caps may seem like a small gesture at first glance. But as this article shows, it can become a movement that creates real, tangible change. Through solidarity, determination and willingness to help, the Bundeswehr and the community have shown that small actions can achieve big things.
