Sometimes it is very important to know the difference between certain words, because in the first sentence with which the video is shared it already says that the boy is not alone: “ Ukrainian boy apparently alone in Poland ”. Seemingly . Not apparently!

The video was shared on several sites, here is a screenshot:

In the 21-second video you can see the little boy apparently alone and crying. A few people can also be seen in front of and behind him, but they are not the focus of the video.

Apparently and apparently

Both words are very often treated as synonymous, but they are not . In the text accompanying the distributed video, another sentence suggests that things are not as it seems at first glance: “ None of the people around him seem to accompany him .”

Note:
apparently = it is only like that based on the external appearance, but the impression is deceptive
apparently = something probably corresponds to the facts as it can be seen

That's why the spread text is not wrong, but at no point does it clearly indicate that the situation is not what it seems, because the boy is not traveling alone from Ukraine to Poland.

The source of the video

On some pages the Reuters agency is named as the source of the video. AFP colleagues asked directly about the origin of the video and were given the following information:

“The boy at the beginning of the video is not an unaccompanied minor. His mother can be seen in the second shot walking in front of him.”

Reuters told AFP

According to Reuter, the video was taken on March 5 in the southeastern Polish border town of Medyka. In fact, you can see several people running in front of the boy in the video:

These exact people can also be seen in a picture shared on Twitter

Due to the wide distribution of the video, the Polish border guard authority clarified:

“#StopFakeNews
We would like to inform you that, contrary to the information unfortunately disseminated in the media, 4-year-old Valeriy did not cross the border alone, but was with his family.
At the #PSGMedyka border crossing he received sweet gifts from the officials. He and his family are safe in Poland.”

Conclusion

The video is real, but the impression that the boy was traveling alone from Ukraine to Poland is false.
