The well-known brain freeze has accompanied most of us since childhood and even as an adult we fall victim to it from time to time.

“Bet you don’t dare…”

And whether you dared. Once you took a bite of the ice cream you regretted it again. The expected pain makes its way behind the forehead to leave the feeling as if the brain is freezing. But no worry. As quickly as this cold pain spreads, it normally disappears again.

Why does our body react this way?

In order to quickly compensate for the cold stimulus that affects blood vessels in the throat and palate in the oral cavity, the body's first protective reflex blood into the brain to immediately prevent loss of body heat. Since this has to happen very quickly, the pressure in the blood vessels increases, resulting in stabbing pain.

Quick help for brain freeze

If you can't wait to finally bite into your ice cream or finish your ice-cold drink in one go, it can help to press your tongue against the roof of your mouth to speed up the pain of the cold. A glass of warm water has the same effect.

If you're not in a hurry, you can let the ice cream melt in your mouth. Not only does it taste better, but the food is warmed before it is swallowed.
