Manipulated returns by a fraudster caused a whopping 330,000 euros in damage. Instead of the smartphones he ordered, he filled the packages with soil and got away with the scam. He kept the smartphones - he also got the money refunded. The error lay in Amazon's standardized returns process.
“The idea of detecting such fraudsters is often very difficult given the high number of returns. To protect yourself from such a big loss, there are a few tips that Amazon sellers can follow so that they don’t fall into this trap,” explains Nicklas Spelmeyer, an expert in FBA business. In the following guest article he reveals how you can be protected from fraud as an Amazon retailer.
Fraudsters love expensive branded products
Anyone who wants to position themselves as a retailer on the Amazon platform is of course faced with the decision of which products they want to trade. It is important to know that fraudsters pay particular attention to high-priced products from well-known brands. Expensive electronics or products from well-known fashion labels are more interesting to fraudsters than the offers from classic private label sellers. A “private label” means your own trademark. Creating your own brand name that doesn't attract the attention of countless fraudsters is definitely worth considering.
Use your own returns management
Of course, as an industry giant, Amazon tries to offer its retailers as much security as possible. The in-house tracking process is therefore intended to check whether a return is actually the product ordered. However, with the large number of returned orders, a lot can go wrong. It is better for a retailer to set up their own returns management system. This is more work, but it also brings more security. Anyone who uses their own returns management as a retailer receives returns from Amazon and can check the contents of the packages themselves.
More security with your own fulfillment
Retailers gain even more security and transparency when they take their fulfillment completely into their own hands. In this case, Amazon serves solely as the platform on which the products are posted; the retailer simply handles customer contact, shipping and returns themselves. In addition to their own customer database, retailers also have more control over who the products are sent to - and how Returns will be processed.
