A photo of six dogs trapped in floods is currently being shared on social media and is incorrectly attributed to Ukraine. This allegedly came from the rupture of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine in June 2023. Moscow and Kiev blamed each other for the incident, which triggered a mass evacuation of surrounding areas when water leaked from a huge breach in the dam.

A photo of six dogs trapped in floods is currently being shared on social media and is incorrectly attributed to Ukraine. Allegedly this came from the rupture of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine in June 2023

The actual origin of the photo

In fact, the photo in question does not come from Ukraine, but from Thailand . It was taken during the worst floods in the city of Ubon Ratchathani in October 2022 . According to Sam McElroy, operations director of the Soi Dog Foundation in Phuket, Thailand, the photo was taken by their animal welfare team. It shows dogs swimming through flooded streets looking for food. The image appeared in local Thai news reports and was attributed to the Soi Dog Foundation.

The wrong assignment

However, the image was linked online to the disaster in Ukraine. Specifically, it was claimed that the image was from the period following the breach of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine in June 2023 . Various posts on Facebook and Twitter suggested that the photo was taken in Ukraine.

The picture comes from the time after the breach of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine in June 2023. However, that is not true!

The truth behind the photo

In October 2022, Thailand experienced an unprecedented monsoon season, resulting in heavy and frequent rains and resulting widespread flooding. The dogs in the photo were part of this crisis in Thailand and had nothing to do with the situation in Ukraine.

MIMIKAMA

The Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine actually burst in June 2023, causing flooding in many areas. There are reports of rescuers trying to save thousands of stranded pets left behind by their owners as they fled the flood. But the photo in question has no connection to these events. Why spread such fake news? remains a mystery at this point!

Conclusion: The photo of six dogs trapped in the floods was taken during the flood disaster in Thailand in October 2022 and has nothing to do with the dam burst disaster in Ukraine in June 2023.
