A video is currently circulating about the taking into care of a child or children in Bremerhaven, which is causing a stir on social media. Several Facebook posts claim that the school caused the incident by teaching the boy that Islam rejects "homosexuality and transgenderism." As a result, a court allegedly deprived the family of their “parental rights” and ordered the child to be handed over to the youth welfare office. “Children” are often spoken of in the media. However, we could only see one child in the video.
Facebook status post: Video in Bremerhaven

In Germany, social services took a child away from a Muslim family because they do not support LGBT people. In the city of Bremerhaven, the youth welfare office took the boy away because of a complaint from the school where he teaches. The family educates him that homosexuality and transgenderism are not acceptable to their religion. There will be a court where they will decide on the deprivation of parental rights, but for now the child has been removed from the parents in order to protect him. 04/29/2023″
Fact check: Video shows operation in Bremerhaven
The police confirmed in a press release on April 29, 2023 that the video shows an operation in Bremerhaven. However, she clarifies that the incident shown in the video has nothing to do with the claims circulating on social media. The police emphasized that taking children into care is always the last resort and only takes place for serious reasons. In this case, the police were called to support the youth welfare office because the custody was ordered by the court.
The Bremerhaven police write:
Video - Operation by the Office for Youth, Family and Women and the Police
A video of a joint operation by the Youth Welfare Office and the Bremerhaven Police is circulating on social networks, which is commented on with false claims about the reasons for the measure.
The video shows a small excerpt of a court-ordered custody of two children.
The police supported the youth welfare office in this operation. Taking children into care is always the last resort and only happens for serious reasons. We ask for your understanding that, in order to protect the family and children, we cannot provide any further explanations on the basis of this decision.
We understand that the video in question is emotionally disturbing. Please do not spread false facts and claims.
A police spokesman denied the allegations spread on social media to the German Press Agency and explained that they were not true. However, the actual reasons for the taking into care were not given in order to protect the family and the children.
According to Jörg Maywald, an expert on children's rights, taking the child into care due to the parents' political and religious views would not be legally tenable, as in such a case there would be no "urgent danger" within the meaning of Section 42 of the Social Security Code.
Conclusion: The research has shown that the claims spread on social media about the children being taken into care in Bremerhaven are false. The police have made it clear that the incident shown in the video is not related to the alleged incident and the true background is not mentioned in order to protect the affected family and children.
