After the election of the Prime Minister in Thuringia, a picture of a letter from Björn Höcke (AfD) to Thomas Kemmerich (FDP) was posted in many places on social media.

The most important thing about Höcke's letter to Kemmerich in Thuringia in brief:

  • Letter from Höcke to Kemmerich is widely shared after the Prime Minister election
  • The letter offers toleration by the AfD
  • It's not a fake

What happened: On February 5, 2020, a new Prime Minister was elected in the Thuringia state parliament. The result was surprising: the FDP state leader Thomas Kemmerich was elected with the votes of the AfD, CDU and FDP.

This type of result in Thuringia was surprising in two respects: on the one hand, the FDP had just jumped over the 5% hurdle in the 2019 state elections and is therefore the smallest parliamentary group in the state parliament, and on the other hand, the AfD MPs (interpreting the vote results) do not have theirs elected their own candidate, but that of another party.

The result in Thuringia sparked outrage in many places, and there was also major criticism from the CDU. The CDU distanced itself from the result in a press conference yesterday and held the FDP responsible:

In the wake of these reactions to the election of the Prime Minister in Thuringia, a letter has now emerged. This letter was sent by Björn Höcke to the Prime Minister Thomas Kemmerich, who was elected yesterday.

This letter is often seen in a hard-to-read version on Twitter, Facebook or WhatsApp, but there is a high-resolution version on the MDR website.

Briefly summarized: In this letter, Björn Höcke offers the FDP boss cooperation in the form of toleration. Specifically, he mentions topics in the areas of education, asylum and immigration policy, internal security and wind power expansion.

In fact, according to the date, this letter was written on November 1st, 2019. According to the reporting media, it is not a fake. The letter, which was posted on social media in a version that was sometimes difficult to read, can be found in high resolution on the MDR website ( see here ).

Thuringia: the context

Höcke's letter dated November 1st, 2019 was actually discussed by several media outlets on November 6th, 2019. Both MDR , Tagesschau and Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on the letter (just to name a few examples).

From these reports you can also see the reactions of politicians to the letter at that time. The MDR, for example, writes that FDP leader Thomas Kemmerich ruled out cooperation with the AfD after the election in Thuringia.
