The topic becomes the subject of a conversation with the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information
been another data breach on the social media platform Facebook .
During the development and testing of a new function, the data protection settings of around 14 million users were changed. This meant that posts created between May 18 and 28, 2018, were set to public by default when they were written, regardless of the privacy settings of those affected, and were therefore made visible to everyone. According to information from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), German users are also affected.
BSI President Arne Schönbohm explains:
This incident once again shows that companies need to take their duty of care for their customers' data much more seriously. It must not be the case that new functions that are tested in live operation endanger people's privacy. It also becomes clear how quickly the number of those affected in such cases increases into the millions. This development will continue to accelerate with increasing digitalization and is a clear indicator that significantly more needs to be done in the area of information security. In order to be able to represent the interests of consumers even better, the responsible data protection and information security authorities must also be adequately strengthened.
The BSI has requested a statement from Facebook. Facebook then explained to the BSI that the content that was mistakenly made public had been reset and is therefore only visible to a limited extent.
Affected users have also been informed of the data breach when logging in since yesterday. Nevertheless, Facebook asks its users to check their data protection settings again.
The BSI will make this topic the subject of its discussions with the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information next week and also the consumer protection centers in order to discuss further measures.
