According to Section 7 of the BSI Act , the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) warns against the use of the digital door lock “HomeTec Pro CFA3000” from the manufacturer ABUS and recommends replacing the product.
Digital door locks are increasingly being used to protect rooms and entrance doors. Different technologies for transmitting closing and opening signals, such as radio, are used for locking and unlocking.
“Vulnerabilities in such wireless door locks not only compromise the main function of the products, but also turn it into the opposite, as these security gaps can be specifically exploited by unauthorized persons,” says BSI President Arne Schönbohm.
Vulnerability in the ABUS product “HomeTec Pro CFA3000 wireless door lock drive”
According to BSI findings, a vulnerability in the ABUS product “HomeTec Pro CFA3000 wireless door lock drive” leads to attackers who are nearby locking and unlocking the wireless lock when exploiting the vulnerability, thereby gaining unauthorized access to buildings and offices or can provide apartments.
The manufacturing company ABUS has confirmed the vulnerability to the BSI and reported that the product examined is a discontinued model that has been replaced by a successor model since March 2021. The secure successor model can be recognized, among other things, by an enclosed keycard with a unique QR code; In addition, the new version of the product and packaging is printed with the Bluetooth logo.
Consumers can receive a final assessment of individual risk situations and further assistance from the manufacturing company. “We expect that companies do not leave their customers alone with a problem of this magnitude and recommend examining the use of alternative products
,” says Schönbohm. The case shows once again that information security is the prerequisite for sustainably successful digitalization.
