The claim

Libraries in Hamburg would accept “unnecessary books” (sic!) for “future heating systems”. A sign in the library administration should prove this.

Our conclusion

It's a fake! The Hamburg Public Library Foundation has filed a criminal complaint.

The first inquiries from surprised people in Hamburg reached the library at the end of August 2022. They had seen a video reporting that Hamburg libraries were collecting books to use as fuel for heating. The video was accompanied by a sign with the wording

“Dear readers, due to the current situation, we are accepting unnecessary [sic!] books for recycling waste paper for future heating. Library management”.

It is this sign:

Fake news about the Hamburg book halls

A photo of a sign with the Hamburg Bücherhallen logo gives the impression that the Bücherhallen created this poster. a criminal complaint because of the use of the logo and the distribution of false statements .

Library director Frauke Untiedt says:

“The book halls are committed to well-researched facts and reliable information. We are therefore taking decisive action against this lie. It is unfortunate that fake news has to use libraries to reinforce one’s political beliefs.”

Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library ) has already been affected by similar attacks in the past few days We reported about it HERE
