A Facebook post that caused a stir among animal rights activists in September 2017 is now making the rounds again.

That article describes how buffalo beetles are essentially “disposed of” because the mothers’ milk is needed to produce buffalo mozzarella.
It is this post:

The text of the article (not complete):

"MOZZARELLA??
….with tomatoes ???? Pizza??? Are you sure you still want to eat something like that???
THESE are the waste calves from the famous buffalo mozzarella.
Buffalo calves for milk production - useless, they are torn away from their mother because their milk is used for the “good” MOZZARELLA production. The male buffalo calves are also useless for meat production. Tied together, even around the mouth, so that the calves cannot scream and the buffalo mothers cannot hear the calves' roar! Simply thrown away alive so as not to disrupt milk production. FORCED to die of thirst, starve and slowly die in silence….”

The text does not come from the author herself, but was apparently copied from the blog of the musician and animal rights activist Lorie Esser, who reported on it in December 2012 and also used the same image. In June 2013, the same text also appeared on the blog “ For the Freedom and Life of All Animals ,” also with this image.

The picture

These are not the buffalo calves in Italy, as claimed in the post and the blog article, but rather calves in India, which actually had to die so cruelly because veal is not very popular in India.

The content of the text

Unfortunately, there was this disgusting misconduct by some breeders, which was reported by the Animal Welfare Association in Italy (LAV). This complaint was directed against 50 companies that were proven to have violated the Animal Welfare Act. However, it must also be noted that around 80% of the breeders based in Italy are based in the area around Campania, which is probably a lot more than 50. We were unable to find exact figures on the number of breeding operations; the majority of these operations comply with applicable laws. It should be mentioned that the “ Consorzio Tutela Mozzarella di Bufala Campana ” (Campania Buffalo Mozzarella Cooperative) is clearly against this practice and cooperates with law enforcement in the event of violations.

Lorie Esser's blog later added that this killing practice is no longer practiced and the calves are slaughtered. That addition cannot be found in the other blog or in the Facebook post.

Conclusion

The image has no connection to the text. This practice was actually carried out by 50 companies in Italy, all of which were reported. Those events were five years ago now, but even today the “Cooperative for Buffalo Mozzarella from Campania” takes great care to ensure that such practices do not occur and works with the law enforcement in this regard.
