But how can victims be supported in such situations?
Arguments and conflicts cannot always be avoided and are part of growing up. It is also normal for children to fight with each other and measure their strength. As long as everyone involved agrees, fights or verbal arguments are not a problem and are nothing to worry about. Even occasional teasing is not bullying.
Systematic humiliation
It is a different matter when a child or young person systematically humiliated, excluded and put down by classmates or group members longer period of time , and when those affected are powerlessly exposed to hostility and harassment.
Bullying is harassment
In English, “to mob” means something like “harassing” or “harassing”.
Bullying occurs in many different ways: For example, children are beaten, pushed, pinched, spit on or have objects thrown at them. Or you take the victim's cell phone, hide their school supplies or break something.
Is bullying a crime?
Not every act of bullying is a crime. However, it is usually the case that over time the perpetrators come up with increasingly worse actions with which to torment their victims. If there is damage to property, theft, insults, physical injuries or robbery crimes (e.g. theft with violence), the threshold for criminal liability has clearly been exceeded.
Tips for supporting those affected
- Never look away from bullying, but stand by the victims.
- Show victims that they are not alone.
- Inform people who can help (parents, teachers, coaches, etc.).
- The sooner perpetrators realize that their behavior will not be tolerated, the sooner they will change their behavior.
Always convey to those affected that they, as victims, are not to blame. Seek help from school psychologists or counseling centers.
