At around 12 p.m., the 22-year-old from Graz (Austria) received a so-called call bot call from an Austrian number. A computer-generated voice guided the 22-year-old along using a keypad. She was then transferred to a person with a Dutch number. The person posed as a foreign police officer. He stated that she had become a victim of data misuse fraud.
The stranger gave her instructions to stay on the phone, withdraw cash and convert it into Bitcoins at an ATM. She sent the receipts she received to the perpetrator. There was damage amounting to several thousand euros.
What is a call bot call?
In call bot calls, the perpetrators use certain computer programs, so-called “call bots,” to call potential victims and confront them with a tape recording. The telephone number that appears on the display is faked using technical means and therefore cannot be traced.
Crime prevention tips
• Immediately cancel phone calls in which you are asked to provide financial assistance or even just information about cash and valuables!
• Do not get involved in any discussions and make it clear to the other person that you will not respond to any of the demands/offers!
• Report it immediately to the nearest police station (emergency number 133)!
• Also talk to your relatives and friends who may not be aware of these scams!
