Fraudsters are no longer just targeting older victims. All users of mobile phones are at risk - including younger people. This is especially true because an English-language announcement can be heard first.
The perpetrators usually claim that personal data has been stolen from those affected and that criminals are using this data to commit crimes. With this scam, the criminal callers try to steal money or obtain information about personal and financial circumstances in order to prepare further crimes.
A mobile phone number appears on the display. Whoever accepts the call first hears a computer voice. This announces in English that personal data is being misused. For further information, the called party should press key “1”.
Anyone who follows the instructions will reach an alleged employee of the law enforcement agency who will inform them about the alleged machinations of criminals, in order to then go after data themselves and get consumers out of their money. Spy software may also be installed that gives the perpetrators access to the smartphone.
The following applies to Europol and Interpol:
The State Criminal Police Office expressly points out that the police would never ask for money to be handed over or transferred. This also applies to Europol and Interpol.
Tips on how to protect yourself from financial loss
If you hear a robot voice, hang up immediately: Under no circumstances should you follow the instructions given by the computer. Under no circumstances should you get involved in a conversation or allow yourself to be put under pressure.
Do not reveal any data: In principle, the principle of data economy applies - especially on the telephone. In the event of unexpected calls, neither data should be confirmed nor data communicated.
Do not transfer money or hand over money: You should never allow yourself to be persuaded over the phone to transfer money or hand over cash at your front door.
Report an incident and file a criminal complaint in the event of damage: Anyone who receives such a call can inform the nearest police station. Anyone who followed the instructions and suffered financial loss should file a criminal complaint immediately.
