Note: This is a warning from the consumer advice center warning against foods containing the hemp ingredient CBD! This information was created as part of a nutrition project funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
It's not just foods with hemp that are trendy. There is also a real hype developing around the hemp ingredient cannabidiol (CBD). Some manufacturers advertise their products as helping with menstrual cramps, sleep disorders or depression. Capsules, CBD oil or chewing gum are available in drugstores, supermarkets and online shops. But foods enriched with CBD are not yet approved. The consumer advice center advises against consumption.
Foods containing hemp seeds or oil, protein or flour derived from them are permitted as traditional food ingredients . Manufacturers are also allowed to use hemp leaves for tea.

The situation is different with fortified foods with CBD – one of the ingredients in the hemp plant – and CBD additives in dietary supplements. According to the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), before they bring CBD-containing products onto the market, suppliers must either submit an application for approval of a medicinal product or an application for approval as a novel food. There are currently no approvals as a novel food.
“The products should not be sold at all,” explains Veronika Wrobel, nutrition expert at the Brandenburg Consumer Center. Consumers can still find them in stores and on the Internet. “Since questions about dosage, safety and interactions have not yet been sufficiently clarified, consumer advice centers advise against consumption,” says Wrobel.
Why are the products available?
The responsible state authorities monitor the sale of food, including products containing cannabidiol. In some federal states, products have already been withdrawn from the market and some court proceedings are ongoing - the products will continue to be offered until a decision is made. “In our view this is unacceptable. We need a nationwide, coordinated approach by the responsible authorities, also to protect particularly sensitive target groups such as children and young people,” said the nutrition expert. In addition, the supervisory authorities cannot test every product available.
Chocolate, chewing gum, candies or energy drinks often contain hemp ingredients whose origin is unclear. In addition, providers use images of hemp leaves and terms such as “relaxed”, “high”, “Beware of addictiveness!” or “This makes the world look more relaxed!” to advertise the plant's intoxicating image.
