At the moment we are receiving a number of inquiries about a topic that we already covered in 2016.

Apparently you should be careful if there is a coin in the car door handle. Criminals probably did this so that they could then steal this car!

Is that correct?

No! Such claims fuel the fear of internet users!

We previously covered this case in January 2016.

It is probably about the fact that some vehicles cannot be locked if the handle is not completely closed. There are car brands where this works and some where it doesn't work. It always depends on how sensitive the door opener is. If you pull on a door handle while you are closing it using a button or key and it is at least half tight, many vehicles will open again straight away .

But you can clearly hear it because it “cracks” twice . A thin cent piece alone is usually not enough, but if the handle is actually opened wide enough, it will be unlocked again immediately (which makes sense, since it can be assumed that the exit and entry has not yet been completely completed).

Our check

As already announced: A Central European copper coin does nothing. This “sign” definitely could not destroy us. None of the tested objects. Like here, for example, VW Polo 2008:

And a Chevrolet Orlando 2012 EZ with a penny in the handle also closes the driver and passenger doors perfectly. At least: A Panda with a manual door lock is not affected either:

I just tried it on the Panda, but only with a manual key. Even if I pull the rear door handle no matter how far and hold it like that, I can open and close it again.

Also with proof picture: Omega B2, year of manufacture 2003, no influence on the ZV and the WP.

This video shows: nada! Nothing happens. None were destroyed.

We feel that most thieves are getting a bad deal when they try to empty vehicles this way. Our colleagues at Snopes also did a little research : they agree with us and also say that only a few models are affected.

However, be careful!

Especially in winter, you may come across vehicles that have wine corks on their door handles. Danger! Scandal! Caution! Under no circumstances should you remove these corks, I know what I'm talking about!

Because many a stylishly designed Italian door handle has its pitfalls: it freezes. And if this handle is frozen, you can no longer get in. You could have saved yourself having to complete it beforehand.
