A car is said to have crashed into a crowd in Berlin-Charlottenburg. According to initial information, there is said to be at least one fatality.

According to initial information from the police, the incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. in the west of downtown Berlin, near the Memorial Church and the well-known Kurfürstendamm. A car is said to have driven off the street onto the sidewalk.

A photo circulating on Twitter shows a gray small car that apparently first smashed through a bar and then the window of the “Douglas” branch:

According to the fire department in Berlin, eight people were injured; rescuers' initial information that the number of victims would be around 30 people has been corrected.

There has also been at least one fatality. A reporter from the “ Morgenpost ” was able to observe on site how a person on the ground was covered with a blue cloth by the emergency services. An agency photo published shortly afterwards confirms this information.

Thilo Cablitz, press spokesman for the Berlin police, said it was still unclear whether it was a traffic accident or an intentional act. The driver was arrested by the police and the vehicle was seized.

The driver of the vehicle is 29-year-old Gor H., a German-Armenian living in Berlin who was arrested.  According to the Bild newspaper, the man is known to the police for property crimes. In the afternoon, a letter of confession was found in the car during a new routine forensics check. So it wasn't an accident. A police officer told the Bild newspaper: “ Definitely not an accident – a gunman, an ice-cold killer.”

UPDATE:

In addition to documents, posters with inscriptions were also found in the car. “There is no real letter of confession,” Interior Senator Spranger said before her tweet. She spoke of “posters” containing statements about Türkiye. The exact motivation of the driver must be investigated and the statements will be examined closely.

The Berlin Senator for the Interior Iris Spranger described the death trip on Wednesday evening as an “act of amok”. “According to the latest information, today’s events on Tauentzienstrasse appear to be an act of amok committed by a mentally impaired person,” Spranger said on Twitter that evening.

UPDATE 6/11:

According to police findings, the driver who died in Berlin had psychological problems in the past. Berlin's Interior Senator Iris Spranger said on Thursday in the House of Representatives that the exact circumstances still had to be clarified as part of the ongoing investigation. The now 29-year-old man of Armenian origin was naturalized in Germany in 2015. He was noticed by the police several times and there were investigations into bodily harm, trespassing and insults. However, nothing is known about political and extremist acts. The suspect has not yet been noticed in connection with anti-constitutional efforts.

No letter of confession was found in the car, said the Interior Senator. But posters were found. Whether and to what extent these are related to the crime is also the subject of the investigation.

One woman died in the incident and 29 people were injured, according to current information, 6 of them life-threatening and 3 seriously. Among them were many 10th grade students from Hesse.
