You just want to use your checking card to withdraw a little money for the weekend and there's trouble at the ATM.

Card gets stuck in the ATM – The most important thing to start with:

  1. The card gets stuck or the ATM doesn't give out enough money or no money at all.
  2. There are many reasons for this: the wrong PIN, the bank has blocked the account, the ATM is broken or fraudsters have manipulated it.
  3. checked4you explains what to do if there are problems with the card at the ATM.

The card doesn't come out, too little money or none at all - what to do? Our cooperation partner checked4you knows what to do:

The card doesn't come out again, nothing happens anymore

The reason is either that you entered the wrong PIN three times or the bank blocked your account. She may do the latter for customers who constantly overdraw their credit or overdraft . Of course, the machine could simply have a screw loose or have been tampered with by card fraudsters.

In any case, you should contact the people behind the machine immediately - either at the branch where you are standing or, if it is closed, at your bank. But please speed up and have the card blocked in any case! If fraudsters were at work, every minute counts.

The machine collects the money again

Many ATMs are programmed to swallow the banknotes again if you don't take them out of the slot within 30 seconds. Don't worry, the money won't be gone, it will be credited back to your account.

By the way, the 30-second trick is done so that no stranger grabs the notes if you are so scatterbrained that you don't take the money out in time.

Card gone

Some ATMs first dispense the money and then return the card. If you're happy to finally see some nice bills and put them in your wallet, it's possible that the card will be withdrawn again by the ATM.

Here, too, there is a short time limit: If the card is not removed, the machine will secure it. It will then be sent to your house bank. You can pick them up there after a few days. By the way, account statements will be withdrawn again after a while.

Not enough money

If the ATM spits out less money than you requested, you should immediately report this to the paying bank or your house bank. The ATM records exactly what amount you have typed in and what notes have been issued. If the two sums do not match, this will of course be compensated.

However, if the bank can provide a correct payout protocol, it will be difficult. The bank will probably only react accommodatingly if several customers make similar complaints that day or if the actual balance in the ATM is higher than the log shows. If too little money comes out of the machine, this can also be an indication of criminal manipulation of the device.

Precautions:

  • If the card gets stuck, don't enter the PIN again just because a seemingly friendly helper comes along and recommends doing so to solve the problem. That does not work. The “helper” then knows the PIN, later takes the card he blocked out of the machine and clears the account.
  • Please only enter your PIN hidden, also at the checkout. Simply hold your hand or wallet over the keypad. This means that curious scouts or even a mini camera have fewer chances.
  • It's smart to use the ATM in the bank. The rooms are often under video surveillance, so fraudsters run a higher risk here. ATMs located outside are much more difficult to monitor.

If you are proven to have fallen victim to fraudsters who spied on your account details, the damage will usually be compensated by the bank. In any case, you can get help from the advice centers of the NRW consumer advice center .

No PIN number on the door

Previously, the door to the ATM room had to be opened with a bank card. A popular crook's trick was to use fake door openers to spy on card details. That's why the vast majority of banks now do without card readers at the entrance.

Card blocking

If your card has been stolen or lost, it is best to call the toll-free number 116 116 immediately. The number can be reached day and night and you can have almost all types of cards blocked there. The service number is also fax-enabled for those with speech and hearing disabilities.

If you call from abroad, you can dial 0049 116 116 - but there is a charge. But ask your bank whether it is actually connected to this blocked number. Individual banks are still boycotting this sensible service.
