At the end of March, the Leipzig public prosecutor's office brought charges against Ofarim - for false suspicion and slander. The Leipzig Regional Court must now decide whether to admit the charges and whether to open the main proceedings. The musician had previously accused a hotel employee of making anti-Semitic comments. The Leipzig public prosecutor's office has now stopped the investigation against the employee.
Hennig told “ZAPP” that he hoped that Ofarim would be acquitted in court. When asked why there was no longer an objection to the discontinuation of the investigation against the hotel employee, he explains: “Mr. Ofarim was originally not interested in blaming a single person, but rather in drawing attention to something to do what happened to him and what he considers unacceptable in today's times." When asked in the interview whether Ofarim still sticks to his original presentation at this point in time, he answers: "You can assume that."
Hotel director Hachmeister: “That was a hurricane”
The director of the affected “Westin” hotel in Leipzig, Andreas Hachmeister, also speaks in detail to “ZAPP” and looks back on the waves of indignation following Ofarim’s allegations: “It was a hurricane that hit us.” The Worldwide press demand could hardly be met. In addition to the media inquiries, hate calls were also commonplace: “For me personally, a part of my life has changed.”
ZEIT journalist Martin Machowecz: “No correction in the world will ever achieve that.”
“ZAPP” examined the waves of outrage on social media surrounding the Ofarim case with NDR data analysts. Despite the indictment by the Leipzig public prosecutor's office, ZEIT journalist Martin Machowecz fears in the "ZAPP" interview: "This level that the initial shitstorm had, this level of outrage that there was when Gil Ofarim uploaded his video onto the Internet, that No correction in the world will ever be achieved.” But one should also refrain from malice towards Gil Ofarim.
The NDR media magazine “ZAPP” had already dealt with the case of Gil Ofarim at the beginning of March 2022 as part of the documentary series “Condemned on the Internet” and traced the waves of outrage on the Internet. The indictment by the public prosecutor was the reason for a continuation. This was also accompanied by further data analysis of the social media discussion about the case.
