25,000 euros cash secured in the mail!

Customs officers from Gießen discovered 25,000 euros in cash, packed with sweets and various textiles, while checking a postal item addressed to France in Kassel at the end of October. They secured the money as part of a so-called clearing process.

The investigators from the Hesse Joint Financial Investigation Group of the Frankfurt am Main Customs Investigation Office and the Hessian State Criminal Police Office immediately began the investigation to clarify the origin of the cash.

Due to the overall circumstances of the matter, there is a suspicion that this is a possible love scam, a so-called “love scam”.

A 69-year-old woman from Lower Saxony wanted to send the cash to a recipient in France. The man had previously contacted her via a social media platform and, in the course of the online friendship that developed, asked for payment of 25,000 euros because he was supposedly in trouble.

“In the so-called “love scam” or “romance scam,” fraudsters usually contact single people via the Internet and make them believe they are romantically interested in order to extort significant monetary payments from their victims. After the money has been transferred, the contact often ends abruptly, so that those affected regularly not only suffer a broken heart, but also high financial damage as a result of this form of digital marriage fraud,” said Carina Orth, spokeswoman for the Frankfurt am Main customs investigation office.

“Unfortunately, such attempts at fraud are now not uncommon,” Orth continued. Cross-border cash controls carried out by customs were able to prevent another “love scam” in the area of the Frankfurt customs investigation office, when a 69-year-old woman from Rhineland-Palatinate wanted to send 18,000 euros by post to Italy.

The customs investigation and police investigators from the Joint Financial Investigation Groups of Hesse and Saarland informed the women about this type of fraud and advised them to file a report. The women can expect to receive the cash back once the procedure is complete.

Further information:

A legal task of customs is to monitor the cross-border movement of cash. Customs is authorized to check both travelers and cross-border postal traffic for cash transported, to check compliance with existing reporting obligations and to secure funds in the event of possible violations of legal provisions. The aim is to clarify the origin and intended use of transported cash and to uncover possible money laundering activities and other crimes.

Investigations in the area of internationally organized money laundering crime are conducted by the Joint Financial Investigation Groups (GFGen), consisting of customs investigators and the police. In the district of the Frankfurt am Main customs investigation office there are a total of three GFGen based in Wiesbaden, Mainz and Saarbrücken. The customs investigators, together with police officers from the Hessian and Rhineland-Palatinate state criminal investigation offices and the Saarland state police headquarters, are actively investigating money laundering.
