“WARNING OF CASH TRAPPERS IN BANK FOYERS!!!”
This is how a status post on Facebook begins, about which we have received a number of inquiries at the moment. Various users are currently copying and sharing information about manipulated ATMs. You should be CAREFUL, because there are supposedly criminals out there at the moment manipulating ATMs in bank foyers. This is the content:

The content as wording:
WARNING ABOUT CASH TRAPPERS IN BANK FOYERS!!!
Dear friends
Since I'm sitting right at the source, I would like to warn you about cash trappers.
These criminals are currently manipulating the cash dispensers in the bank foyers again.
All machines except one are manipulated to the extent that a malfunction occurs.
What remains is a single cash dispenser, which is provided with an attachment at the cash dispensing slot.
No notes come out of these machines!!
When a customer leaves the foyer, the perpetrator enters it and takes the banknotes.
If something like this happens to you, don't leave the foyer. If possible, call the security center on the service telephone.
(Should be available in all banks and their foyers). If you don't have any contact with your bank, don't be afraid to call the police!
You are welcome to share this to warn other bank customers.
Unfortunately, you can't tell from the status post itself where the incident occurred. But if you look at various press releases from the police, such manipulations occur all the time. It was only on September 13, 2018 that the Diepholz police station reported the following:
ATMs tampered with
The police are concerned about several cases of “cash trapping”. On Tuesday between 5:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., three ATMs were tampered with in two financial institutions in Seckenhausen and Brinkum. Cash trapping is the manipulation of the cash dispenser. An unknown male person manipulated the dispensing slot, presumably by installing a cover, so that customers were shown a problem when withdrawing money. The perpetrator obtains the withdrawn money when the injured party leaves the bank branch due to the disruption.
The police are warning all bank customers to be particularly careful when withdrawing money outside of business hours. A metal rail is attached to the cash dispenser shaft for cash trapping. When issuing money, the withdrawn money gets stuck and an error appears. In such a case, the police ask for immediate notification. Since the police in the Diepholz district have already dealt with several of these cases, they ask for special attention and immediate information if something appears suspicious. ( Source )
But the Osnabrück police station also reported such an incident
Police warn against manipulation of ATMs
It's about so-called cash trapping, which is a special form of theft from ATMs. A deceptively real closure is stuck over the cash dispenser slot. This closure has a double-sided adhesive film on the inside. This prevents the money from being spent or withdrawn from the machine - the banknotes literally remain stuck in the dispensing slot. The ATM works perfectly! The bank customer simply cannot access the money he has withdrawn because the money ejector is not opened. Instead, after a while, a message indicating a malfunction appears. Most customers then leave the bank to try their luck at another ATM. Then the thief's hour has come - he can simply remove the cover and disappear with the notes "stuck" inside. Several of these cases were reported to the police in Osnabrück and Bramsche. Apparently the perpetrators visited smaller bank branches so that they could “peacefully” collect the unspent money. The investigators are asking other victims or witnesses who can provide important information about the people who picked up the items to call 05461 915300
How to protect yourself from the thieves' tricks at the ATM: – Stay at the ATM in any case. Don't let a supposedly helpful stranger lure you away from the machine. – Ask another customer to fetch a bank employee. For ATMs outside of banks, you may need to call the bank using your cell phone. – Notify the police outside the opening hours of banks and credit institutions. ( Source )
