The Facebook page “Bonsai-Katzen Deutschland eV” is irritating and causing outrage – are cats actually stuffed into glass vessels here?
We again received inquiries about a Facebook page we knew. Glasses are presented here that are supposedly filled with cats. On the site you will find information that the cats would be given a new, sublime and noble shape through the glass vessels and that the so-called bonsai cats would look back on a tradition that is many hundreds of years old.
In any case, such status posts are published here at more or less regular intervals:

News from the Bonsai Cat Fair in Stockholm: Several companies now have classic Bonsai cat jars on offer again.
These glasses, consistently in a retro style, are reminiscent of Chinese cat glasses from the last century. Of course, I couldn't help myself and spontaneously treated myself to two of these glasses and filled them last week with cats that had run into me on the neighboring property and were calmed down with 100 ml of vermouth each.
What immediately catches the eye: The classic glasses are very practical in everyday use because the breeder can easily get to the cat through the slanted opening. In addition, of course, there is the extremely noble and elegant look of the glasses, which are cleverly placed on the windowsill and are very well made. To allay the fears of all shocked Facebook users, here is the solution:
Even a very old hoax. This “fun idea” has been floating around the internet for more than 18 years now. Back in 2000 there was a site called bonsaikitten.com, which is now inactive. Our colleagues at Snopes cleared up this strange practice back in 2011:
When it was running (the site is no longer active), the Bonsai Kitten web site was a joke, not an actual promotion for the making of bonsai kittens. Investigations by law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, determined no real cats were harmed in the creation of the pictures used on the Bonsai Kitten website. Signing a petition to shut down the Bonsai Kitten website will not prevent any kittens from being harmed, because no kittens were harmed in the first place.
Here it becomes clear that it was a “joke” by students at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Even the FBI examined the photos and found that, fortunately, no cats were being tortured.
Your spirit will live on...
Even if the students no longer run this original site, the spirit of “Bonsai Kitten” lives on. And that in the form of the Facebook page “Bonsai-Katzen Deutschland eV”.
However, it is still a joke, which is not explained as satire. This irritates many Facebook users and animal rights activists repeatedly protest against this type of alleged animal cruelty.
Result:
This Facebook page is a hoax.
The origin of this idea dates back to the year 2000.
The case was even investigated by the FBI.
