At lunch with your best friend, your cell phones are on the table. As you lie on the couch in the evening with your cell phone and scroll through Instagram, you see advertisements for apps that your friend has talked about. As you continue checking social media, you see advertisements for the new iPhone. You talked about it at dinner too! Can this be a coincidence?
Is my cell phone listening?
Because of such incidents, many people are convinced that their cell phones are listening in so that Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and other apps can display tailored advertising.
Is that even possible? And can this be proven?
PULS Reportage reporter Nadine Hadad and programmer Sebastian Bayerl from the “BR AI + Automation Lab” try it.
In a complex experiment, they want to find out whether and to what extent apps on iPhones and Android cell phones can secretly listen. During the course of the experiment, Sebastian programs two apps: With one he tries to turn on the microphone in Nadine's cell phone unnoticed. With the other app he wants to record speech using the smartphone's motion sensors - without a microphone! You can see whether this is successful and what privacy researchers Jacob Kröger, Meta, Apple and Google say about cell phone tapping in this PULS report.
