Regardless of whether it's a cell phone, tablet or notebook - if you take your device outside in the summer, you shouldn't expose it to the heat. Direct sunlight and extreme heat damage electronic devices and their batteries.
The battery technology for smartphones, tablets and laptops is constantly being developed and improved, but as the performance increases, the energy requirements of the devices also increase. In order to meet these requirements, mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras and laptops are currently primarily operated with so-called lithium batteries.
The approximately 200,000 e-bikes that are already in circulation in Austria are also powered by very powerful lithium batteries. The advantages over conventional batteries lie primarily in the higher energy density and low self-discharge, even when stored for longer periods.
“However, lithium batteries also pose potential dangers,” warns the waste management company.
“These batteries react violently to strong heat and mechanical damage. For example, if a cell phone falls on the floor, invisible cracks can appear in the battery membranes. The same applies to larger devices, such as cordless screwdrivers or e-bikes. During the next charging processes, the cracks can widen and short circuits can occur, which can cause fires.” This means that special care and attention is required for the batteries. “However, through careful handling and correct disposal, the occurrence of uncontrolled chain reactions can be largely prevented,” explains Mag. Elisabeth Giehser, Managing Director of EAK.
The following measures are recommended:
Batteries and accumulators or old electrical devices containing accumulators or batteries can be taken to around 2,000 municipal collection points (manure sites, recycling centers, etc.) in Austria, where they are recycled in an environmentally friendly manner.
Even in shops that sell batteries and accumulators, old, small and undamaged energy dispensers can be handed in free of charge in the designated “Give it Empty” battery collection boxes. – Detailed information can be found on the “Elektro Ade” website .
